We have supercomputers in our pockets and remote work is common. Yet, in K-12 classrooms, it still feels like a 1950s sitcom with old setups. Sep 17, 2025 Think about how much the world has changed in just the last 20 years. We carry supercomputers in our pockets, remote work and learning are now the norm, and we can ask a robot to write our grocery list. But walk into a typical K-12 classroom and... déjà vu. The setup still mirrors something out of a 1950s sitcom: rows of hardback desks all facing the front, where the teacher holds court. It’s not that the old model didn’t work, it’s just that teaching and learning have evolved. Dramatically. And if the goal is to prepare students for a future that’s faster, more connected, and more complex than ever before, the spaces where they learn need to evolve, too. Unlike the classrooms of old, today’s classrooms need to be built with choice in mind, and flexibility and mobility are critical components. Providing different types of seating and tables in K-12 classrooms, libraries and cafeterias, as well as collaborative and lounge areas, are just a couple of ways furniture can support the modern classroom. Classrooms also must support two essential pillars: 21st Century Learning and Accessibility. The Framework for 21st Century Learning, developed by the Partnership for 21st Century Skills (P21), lays it out clearly. To thrive in today’s world, students need to build mastery around what educators call the “4 Cs”: Critical thinking Communication Collaboration Creativity But innovation can’t stop at the teaching approach. To truly support every student, we also need to make sure the environment itself doesn’t hold them back. That’s where accessibility comes in — not just physical accessibility, but cognitive and emotional accessibility, too. • Environmental Defense Fund

EDF’s DC Office Redesign Prioritizes Sustainability, Flexibility, and Inclusive Design. A modern move driven by sustainability goals, workplace flexibility, and brand-aligned, nature-inspired design. Project Experience Environmental Defense Fund Washington, DC Project Stats Completed 2024 Location Washington, DC Square Footage Partners & Manufacturers Perkins + Will Manufacturers Used The Environmental Defense Fund’s (EDF) Washington DC office relocated when its building underwent a transformation, shifting from office space to residential living. This move to a new location provided them with an opportunity to update and modernize their workspace. It was more than a necessity; it became a chance to align their physical office with their organizational values and evolving work culture. “We have a new workplace strategy,” said Brian Attas, Vice President of Corporate Services and Risk Management at EDF, “The idea was to provide more flexibility for different kinds of workers such as remote, hybrid or even permanently in-office employees, giving them the opportunity to work based on their need for focus or collaboration.” Because of the nature of their organization, EDF also had aggressive sustainability goals for their new office. They sought to reduce carbon impact, incorporate recycled and sustainable materials, and maximize the reuse of existing furniture. To achieve these objectives, EDF partnered with the architectural firm Perkins and Will to create a space that embodies their mission and values. “Material vetting is very stringent at Perkins and Will,” said Kate Currie, Sr. Interior Designer +Senior Associate, Perkins and Will. “Finishes were selected with high recycled content, and we have a precautionary list to weed out any health adverse compounds. We look at sustainability through multiple lenses.” EDF also wanted to push the limits with color and vibrancy to match their brand and mimic colors found in nature. They desired to achieve global consistency for future offices while also allowing for certain design elements to be regionally specific. “We emphasized blue and green, which were taken right from their logo,” said Currie, “They also happen to be the two most commonly seen colors in nature.” Private offices and focus rooms have colors that are also part of the branding package with the added benefit of being good for people with color blindness. Perkins and Will designed “neighborhoods,” based on ecosystems local to DC, like developed land, undeveloped land and waterways. These neighborhoods were used to gather, meet and work. The prime areas of circulation were inspired by DC waterways, like the Anacostia River and the Potomac River. When it came time to select furniture, Henricksen was one of five vendors that responded to the RFP and were ultimately selected. They were selected because the furniture options they presented, as well as the overall relationship. “We went on a lot of tours with them,” said Attas. “We were able to sit down with Henricksen and Perkins and Will to really discover what we needed and it was really a matter of trust” Henricksen helped inventory the existing furniture and recommended pieces that could be reused in the new space. In the old location, private offices were located along the perimeter, in a very traditional office layout that monopolizes daylight and views. In the new space, they moved to an unassigned workspace to create an agile and dynamic open plan. Reservable private offices and focus rooms are now located in the interior and every workstation is height adjustable. To support diverse workstyles, the office incorporates a mix of banquettes, bar-height seating, standard-height tables, and lounge areas, catering to different postures and activities. “The space supports neurodiversity by offering variety and choice,” said Currie. “It’s designed for both individual focus and collaborative work.” EDF’s new minimalist, clean workspace prioritizes choice, functionality, and sustainability. The successful collaboration with Henricksen left a lasting impression on EDF, solidifying a partnership for future projects across the country. “They are our provider,” said Attas. “I have complete trust in their ability to deliver. It’s a great fit for us as we continue on this journey.” Currie echoed this sentiment, stating, “Working with Henricksen was amazing. They were always prepared, responsive, and collaborative. The process was smooth from start to finish.” This project highlights how thoughtful design, sustainability, and collaboration can transform a relocation into an opportunity for innovation and alignment with organizational values. • Confidential Financial Services Company

The client relocated to a more efficient Chicago office, reusing and resizing furniture. With Henricksen’s expertise, they achieved a cohesive, inviting space reflecting their brand and saving costs. Project Experience Confidential Financial Services Company Chicago, IL Project Stats Completed 2025 Location Chicago, IL Square Footage 8,000 Partners & Manufacturers Whitney Architects, HON, Gunlocke Manufacturers Used Confidential Financial Services Company, a long-time Henricksen client, sought to downsize and relocate its Chicago office. Their goal was to adapt existing furniture to fit into the new, more efficient footprint without compromising design or functionality. In addition, “The client wanted to create an inviting space that reflected their brand,” said Courtney Zastrow, Design Manager, Whitney Architects. The primary challenges included resizing large private office desks to meet building code requirements for the smaller offices and finding a cohesive design strategy that blended a mix of different wood tones and existing furniture styles. Additionally, the client planned to redistribute surplus furniture from Chicago to its other offices in Pasadena, The Woodlands, and North Carolina, requiring careful planning and coordination across multiple locations. Henricksen collaborated closely with the client and their design partner, Whitney Architects, to create a highly tailored solution. The approach included modifying existing private office desks to fit new office dimensions while maintaining their quality and appearance. Surplus furniture was reallocated across multiple locations, supplemented with new Gunlocke private office furniture and HON workstations where needed, to maintain style consistency. Hospitality-inspired ancillary pieces were also introduced to enhance the reception areas, break rooms, and collaboration spaces, creating a welcoming and brand-aligned environment. A detailed "lookbook" created by Henricksen designer Kristin Laudick ensured that each location followed a cohesive design narrative despite variations in reused and new furnishings. Throughout the process, Henricksen’s project management team played a critical role in coordinating logistics, managing furniture rework, and providing flexible responses to client requests and evolving project needs. The client's new offices successfully blend efficiency, hospitality, and brand alignment. By thoughtfully modifying and redistributing existing assets while integrating strategic new purchases, Henricksen helped them achieve significant cost savings without sacrificing quality or aesthetic appeal. The new spaces feel inviting, professional, and comfortable, perfectly supporting their goals of creating efficient yet welcoming environments for employees and clients alike. “Henricksen excelled at project management on this project,” said Zastrow. “Due to the amount of rework of existing product, there were a lot of moving parts to get the project executed successfully. There was a very collaborative approach throughout the process and Henricksen was very accommodating to all client requests and curveballs along the way.” The client now operates with greater space efficiency across multiple offices, all while maintaining a consistent and polished brand experience. • Middleton Pope Farm Elementary

Middleton Cross Plains Area School District addressed overcrowding by building a new school inspired by conservancy land, with versatile seating options, leading to high satisfaction. Project Experience Middleton Pope Farm Elementary Verona, WI Project Stats Completed 2020 Location Verona, WI Square Footage 113,000 Partners & Manufacturers SFI | Systems Furniture Installation, EUA | Eppstein Uhen Architects, Allsteel, Formcore, Humanscale, National, SitOnIt, SitOnIt Seating, VS America, Wisconsin Bench Manufacturers Used The elementary schools in the Middleton Cross Plains Area School District were becoming overcrowded and using temporary outbuildings as add-on classroom space was no longer working to address the issue. Fortunately, a large parcel of land that previously belonged to the Pope Farm Conservancy was donated and enabled the District to construct a new school to serve grades K-4. New furniture was needed for all spaces in the new school and, because they were starting from scratch, they could establish brand new standards that addressed flexibility, accessibility, and collaboration to create a true 21st century learning environment. “We, along with Eppstein Uhen Architects (EUA), interviewed a number of furniture vendors and we chose Henricksen,” said Bill Eberhardt, Building Projects Manager for Middleton Cross Plains Area School District. The team at Henricksen observed teachers in their existing classrooms, and noted what worked and what their challenges were. The spaces seemed cramped and the furniture was not flexible. There was also not much variety of seating for the students who needed alternative options. Henricksen deployed three different pilot classrooms at the existing elementary schools in the district. This allowed the teachers to test out new ways of teaching, as well as ask the students about what they liked and why they liked it before making selections for the new school. Student and teacher assessments of the classrooms was important to the planning process, as they would be the ones spending the most time in these new spaces. “The teachers were really open to trying new things and also got feedback from the students themselves,” said Julie Disch, Senior Interior Designer, Eppstein Uhen Architects (EUA). Multiple meetings were held throughout the design process and Henricksen would present different furniture and layout concepts based on their observations. Eberhardt shares, “They would get a concept down and then bring in the furniture so we could test it out. The Henricksen staff is very attentive. They were very patient with all the different choices and costing options.” The interior of the school was designed around pollinators – drawing inspiration from the conservancy land – and how important they are to human survival. Each grade wing was given a pollinator or plant used by the pollinators to define their area, referred to as a pod. As an example, 1st grade is the humming bird and 2nd grade is bee balm. Those two species really rely on each other. The school uses the conservancy site and the classroom pods to help connect the students to the real-world concepts of prairies. “We picked out ottomans that would create a flower,” said Disch. In the kindergarten wing hexagonal shaped ottomans mimic bumble bee hives. The finishes selected tie into the whole concept of pollinators as well. In the classrooms, there are different tiers of seating, from floor cushions to standing-height wobble stools, and everything is on casters so that even the kids can move the furniture. Disch explains, “The school is really unique because they don’t offer 1:1 classroom chairs for the students. They have about 15 traditional chairs and then use floor cushions and standing-height stools to supplement. They really pushed the envelope when it came to student choice and student preference.” Jessica Taylor, Principal, Middleton Pope Elementary School adds, “the children love the novelty of the shape of some of the tables, like the puzzle shape.” There are also quadrilateral tables, whiteboard tables, and low tables so students can sit on lily pads on the floor that are very popular for the kids and teachers. Outside of the classrooms there are collaboration spaces offering additional flexibility and student choice. “The children have the option to use these spaces beyond the classroom and it’s really fun for them,” said Taylor. “The furniture is comfortable, but durable, and feels homey to a lot of kids and adults.” Allsteel’s Rise tiered lounge pieces were specified for these collaborative areas. “You walk by, and kids are laying on different levels as they are reading,” said Taylor. “The system is really functional but also really comfortable and it gives kids an alternative space to do their work and engage differently.” In other spaces throughout the school the furniture is on casters to promote maximum flexibility. As an example, the bookcases in the library are on casters so that they can easily be adjusted or moved to accommodate new room layouts. The teachers and staff also have height-adjustable desks, and even standing-height tables in all the classrooms. The staff, just like the students, appreciate the versatility of the furniture. At the conclusion of the project there were happy students, teachers, and staff. Taylor shares, “the multi-function of the pieces is really nice. They really thought of everything.” Share Copy link LinkedIn Facebook Pinterest Start Your Project First name* Last name* Email* Company Phone Subscribe to Our Newsletter* Yes No Location (City) Location (State)* State Upload a File (if needed) Upload a File Message* Submit

  • Revelry Apartments

Henricksen brought Revelry Apartments' bold, playful vision to life, balancing creativity and budget with custom furnishings and art installations to craft an energetic, vibrant space. Project Experience Revelry Apartments Madison, WI Project Stats Completed 2024 Location Madison, WI Square Footage Partners & Manufacturers Saturday Properties, Cunningham Manufacturers Used Revelry Apartments, a multifamily building in Madison, Wisconsin, was designed to cater to a young, vibrant crowd. Located near the university, Revelry’s identity was crafted to be “extroverted”—a space where every day feels like Saturday, as is the philosophy of the developer, Saturday Properties. The overall design aimed to capture a sense of playfulness, boldness, and activity, contrasting with a quieter “introverted sibling” building, which will be developed as part of the project’s second phase. The design vision called for bright, primary colors and lively textures and fabrics, evoking a boutique hotel aesthetic with a post-college feel. Visitors and residents are greeted with an immediate view of the outdoor pool deck, drawing them toward a central hub featuring a bar and an open, inviting atmosphere. “This project created a unique opportunity for me to play with color,” said Monica Coleman, Interior Designer, Cunningham, “which is something I don’t normally do – just playing with patterns and color and finding where to celebrate it.” Henricksen’s challenge was to execute this vision while navigating budget constraints and a tight timeline, all while incorporating custom pieces and art installations that would energize the space. Cunningham’s design team and Henricksen collaborated closely to bring Revelry Apartments to life. After the initial project scope was priced and was found to exceed the budget, Henricksen led a value engineering process to refine the design within budget, making adjustments while preserving the bold, social spirit of the space. Despite the tighter timeline, Henricksen sourced and installed a variety of commercially rated, custom furnishings, including custom rugs and accent pieces. Art installations curated by the Parade Group added a layer of personality, with Henricksen overseeing the installation to ensure the pieces complemented the furniture, palette, and textures selected for Revelry Apartments. Key pieces included gold boucle fabric seating and a yellow-patterned banquette, evoking a mid-century feel that contrasted with darker tones, bringing a sense of playfulness and sophistication. Furnishings became the personality of the space, creating focal points and inviting moments to lounge or connect. “I think Henricksen did an incredible job in moving forward the brand that we wanted,” said Nate Brice, Saturday Properties. Henricksen showcased adaptability, commitment to quality and creative problem-solving during the installation phase of the project. For example, as the project neared completion, Henricksen discovered an unexpected chair rail in a hallway, conflicting with plans to hang artwork. With just two days to opening, the Henricksen team provided three solutions to the problem and implemented the chosen approach, ensuring a seamless finish and maintaining the design intent. “On every project you run into surprises,” said Brice. “Henricksen was extremely adaptive and helped us deal with any curveballs.” Revelry Apartments serves as an example of how Henricksen can balance creativity with practical constraints to deliver spaces that resonate with clients and end-users. Through flexibility, value engineering, and attention to detail, Henricksen helped create a unique, memorable environment that aligns with Madison’s energetic vibe. • Azura Memory Care and Assisted Living

Azura Senior Living in Verona, WI, combines high-quality assisted living and memory care with a home-like feel, featuring durable furnishings and a design that fosters social interaction. Project Experience Azura Memory Care and Assisted Living Verona, WI Project Stats Completed 2024 Location Verona, WI Square Footage 108,571 Partners & Manufacturers SFI | Systems Furniture Installation, EUA | Eppstein Uhen Architects, DuraCare Seating, Fairfield Chair, H Contract, HON, Kwalu, Surfaceworks Manufacturers Used To meet the growing demand for high-quality senior living environments, Azura Senior Living expanded its network with a newly constructed facility in Verona, Wisconsin. Designed to offer both assisted living and memory care, the two-story building features four thoughtfully planned wings on each floor—two dedicated to memory care and two to assisted living. The challenge? Creating a space that seamlessly blends the durability required for senior care with the warmth and familiarity of home. Achieving this delicate balance required close collaboration between Eppstein Uhen Architects (EUA) and Henricksen. EUA led the interior design efforts, while Henricksen provided comprehensive procurement services, including furniture, art, accessories, signage, and window treatments, ensuring that every design choice supported both functionality and comfort. “The vision started with a farmhouse exterior,” said Karen Davis, Senior Interior Designer at EUA. “On the interior, we wanted to introduce mid-century modern elements to create a fresh yet familiar aesthetic.” To further enhance the residential feel, common areas were designed around the concept of seasons—summer, fall, spring, and winter—bringing warmth and visual variety to the community. These themes guided the selection of furnishings, color palettes, and artwork to create a distinct identity for each space while maintaining a cohesive atmosphere throughout the facility. Henricksen’s dedicated senior living team, with over 15 years of expertise in the sector, conducted extensive interviews with Azura to understand their unique needs. Through budgeting exercises and guided tours of similar projects, they helped Azura staff gather insights and apply lessons learned to refine the design. The collaborative process culminated in a detailed charette, where each selection was reviewed and approved. “Henricksen worked with us and the client on the design,” said Davis. “The whole thing really came to life between the interior architecture and the furniture.” A key differentiator of Azura’s approach is its household model, designed to foster social interaction and reduce feelings of isolation often experienced by seniors. Each household includes a receiving area for visitors, a formal dining space, a cozy parlor, and a great room, all scaled to feel like a private residence rather than an institution. “Azura is unique in that we provide a household model,” said Matthew Lyons, Director of Development at Azura Living. “From a care perspective, we want to help combat the isolation and depression often faced by seniors. We have household entrances to each wing that help shift the mindset of visitors and residents by reinforcing the normal social cues associated with entering into people’s homes.” To maintain a home-like feel while ensuring durability, careful attention was given to the selection of furniture and materials. The dining area features Duracare aluminum-framed chairs with a wood-look finish, offering both elegance and resilience. Soft seating solutions were sourced from Fairfield and H-Contract, while resident room furniture—including bedside tables, headboards, mattresses, and box springs—was provided by Kwalu. Dining spaces were intentionally designed to avoid a cafeteria-like atmosphere. A mix of seating arrangements, including two-tops and activity tables, created a dynamic and inviting dining experience. “It doesn’t feel like an institutional dining room,” said Lyons. “It feels like a home where you can choose your own seating arrangement.” Throughout the community, thoughtful design choices—such as color distinctions to differentiate spaces and bold touches like a pink ceiling—helped create a vibrant and welcoming environment. Artwork played a key role in reinforcing the homelike atmosphere, integrating historical elements from the surrounding community while featuring curated pieces on every wall. With its blend of high-end residential aesthetics, durable furnishings, and a strong emphasis on creating a true sense of home, Azura Verona sets a new standard for senior living. The project not only enhances residents' quality of life but also serves as a model for future assisted living and memory care communities. • Fox Point Bayside School District

The Fox Point Bayside School District renovated its middle school, partnering with Henricksen and VS America for furniture that fosters collaboration and meets diverse student needs. Project Experience Fox Point Bayside School District Fox Point, WI Project Stats Completed 2024 Location Fox Point, WI Square Footage 115,000 Partners & Manufacturers EUA | Eppstein Uhen Architects, VS America Manufacturers Used The Fox Point Bayside School District embarked on a transformative project to renovate their middle school. The goal was clear: to modernize the learning environment to support 21st-century education. The old building was traditional, with limited collaborative spaces, an inadequate Library Media Center (LMC), and classrooms ill-suited for contemporary teaching methods. Much of the existing furniture, though functional, was outdated. The district sought sturdy, modern furniture that would stand the test of time while enhancing the educational experience. Accessibility was also a critical focus. The aim was to provide furniture and spaces that accommodated diverse student needs, encouraging movement and collaboration while aligning classroom design with teaching methodologies. The school district partnered with EUA on the architectural design and programming and created an RFP for the furniture procurement. Henricksen was awarded the furniture portion of the project after an extensive interview process. They were selected based on the proposed furniture solutions which included training and change management provided in partnership with VS America (an educational furniture manufacturer), as well as an established relationship they had with the school district from previous projects. Henricksen approached this project as more than just a furniture vendor. Emphasis was placed on changing both the environment and the teaching style to create a new, modern learning environment. To begin this process, pilot classrooms were set up in the existing building and tested by both staff and students. Surveys were conducted, and feedback sessions were hosted with the impacted teachers. “The meetings held with teachers were incredible,” said Jodi Hackl, Principal, Bayside Middle School, “Henricksen met with teachers one on one and in a group setting, both as teaching group and separated by grade level. It took a lot of time, and Henricksen listened and made changes in real time, which made the teachers feel so heard.” The Henricksen team also advocated for VS America as a furniture partner. VS America was able to bring in its Director of Education, Jill Ackers, herself a former teacher, to connect the furniture choices with instructional practices through several professional development sessions. This approach ensured the furniture complemented the curriculum and supported teaching and learning. VS America is a 125-year-old company specializing in furnishings for educational spaces. Along with bringing a research-driven approach to the table, they provide quality products designed based on ergonomic principles and modern educational models. “VS has always been a research-based company,” said Monica Hartman, Regional Sales Manager, VS America “We worked with Maria Montessori and continue to connect with experts in the field. The educational model has completely changed, and we create product that supports today’s curriculums.” Part of the goal at VS America is to provide furniture, but they also help support schools with expertise and professional learning. “We know that in order to impact student experiences, teachers have to have a deeper proficiency level,” said Hartman. “Part of our work is to build trust for teachers, to help facilitate change.” Almost all furniture in the new space is mobile, with even science tables retrofitted with wheels based on teacher feedback. The new classroom wing features collaborative areas that complement traditional classrooms. Students utilize mobile tables, varying-height furniture, and lounge seating to foster independent and group learning. Henricksen’s vision and expertise have transformed the school into a model of 21st-century learning. “Henricksen’s ideas for collaborative furniture exceeded my expectations,” said Hackl. “The students use the spaces independently and respectfully. Henricksen’s expertise and commitment to our goals were outstanding.” The collaboration between EUA and Henricksen played a pivotal role in achieving the vision for the new school. “EUA and Henricksen both knew where we were coming from,” said Hackl. “The old school had so many additions, it was disjointed and wasn’t a nice environment for kids.” The team reimagined the space with a focus on accessibility, collaboration, and budget-conscious solutions. The project met all critical objectives, ensuring a transformative learning environment. The Fox Point Bayside School District sets a new standard for educational spaces, demonstrating how thoughtful design and change management can create a lasting impact on teaching and learning. • Celebrating Women's History Month with Ada M. Tremonte from ada Design Associates Celebrating Women's History Month with Ada M. Tremonte from ada Design Associates

This Women’s History Month, we celebrate Ada M. Tremonte of ada Design Associates for her resilient career, advocacy, and mentorship in the design industry. News + Insights Celebrating Women's History Month with Ada M. Tremonte from ada Design Associates This Women’s History Month, we celebrate Ada M. Tremonte of ada Design Associates for her resilient career, advocacy, and mentorship in the design industry. Mar 26, 2025 This Women’s History Month, Henricksen proudly celebrates Ada M. Tremonte, NCIDQ, IDEC, IDLCPA, IIDA, of ada Design Associates in Pennsylvania. Ada’s exceptional career represents the perfect blend of resilience, advocacy, and mentorship. Her expertise and commitment to empowering others resonate across the industry as she creates inclusive environments where individuals can thrive. Inspired by the generations of women who broke barriers before her, Ada leads with purpose, redefining perceptions of interior design and uplifting those around her. For Ada, advocating for Interior Design has been a life’s mission. She explains, “Interior Design has often been misunderstood—viewed as merely decorative rather than a vital, technical discipline shaping the built environment. People have called it ‘frivolous’ or ‘easy,’ dismissing the depth of knowledge required. But I refuse to let outdated perceptions define me. Instead, I prove them wrong. I am strong. I am skilled. I am creative. I am a problem solver. I am an advocate for this profession. As an educator and a leader, I work tirelessly to ensure that Interior Design is recognized for what it truly is: a field grounded in technical expertise, safety regulations, human-centered design, and innovation.” Through her work, Ada has consistently demonstrated how the field’s depth, complexity, and impact extend far beyond what many realize, challenging misconceptions and paving the way for others to follow. Mentorship remains a defining aspect of Ada’s career as a professional and educator. As the Director of Interior Design at Drexel University’s Westphal College of Media Arts & Design, Ada has committed herself to empowering her students to enter the industry confidently and passionately. “I equip them with the technical expertise and strategic thinking they need to succeed—but more importantly, I instill in them the belief that they are essential contributors to the built environment. They are not just designers but problem solvers, innovators, and changemakers. I want every woman I mentor to know that she belongs, that her voice matters and that she has the power to redefine the industry,” she shares. Her deep-seated belief in the importance of mentorship exemplifies her dedication to nurturing the next generation of leaders and ensuring they have the skills and self-assurance to succeed. Ada’s philosophy of persistence and purpose further underscores her leadership. “I believe that adversity is not a roadblock—it is fuel. Challenges are not meant to weaken us but to strengthen our resolve. Everyone faces hardships; if we allow them to fester, they can hold us back. Instead, I have made it my mission to use adversity as a springboard, pushing forward with unwavering determination. A ‘NO’ is never the final answer; finding another way is simply a challenge. Ada explains that trusting our instincts, standing by our values, and persevering are the keys to real transformation,” Ada explains. Her words embody the resilience and vision that have marked her career, inspiring her students and all who meet her to remain steadfast in their goals. Henricksen is honored to spotlight Ada’s remarkable contributions and the legacy she is building within the interior design profession. Her resilience, innovation, and dedication to empowerment are a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when we advocate for our passions and uplift those around us. This Women’s History Month, we celebrate Ada and the countless women who continue shaping, challenging, and transforming our world for the better. • Manhattan Schools

Manhattan Junior High School transformed its spaces through a collaborative effort of design and education experts, showcasing the power of teamwork and modern educational needs. Project Experience Manhattan Schools Manhattan, IL Project Stats Completed 2024 Location Manhattan, IL Square Footage Partners & Manufacturers HON, Pepper Construction, STR Partners, Installation Specialists Inc Manufacturers Used Manhattan Junior High School, nestled in a close-knit community southwest of Chicago, underwent a remarkable transformation as key stakeholders worked together to create flexible, inviting spaces tailored to modern educational needs. This ambitious project united design and education experts, including Sarah Rodefeld from HON, Holly Clarke and David Clay from Henricksen, David Shea with Installation Specialists Inc, and community members like Jeff Dvorak, Group Superintendent, and Kirk Beutke, Project Manager at Pepper Construction. Their collaboration exemplifies the impact of teamwork and thoughtful design. VISION + OBJECTIVES The Manhattan Schools project focused on two primary goals: enhancing classroom flexibility and reimagining the cafeteria into a multifunctional, welcoming space. Superintendent Jeff Dvorak, a longtime community member, shared his personal connection: “This project meant so much more to me because this is my community, and my son will experience something I helped create. The memories we made throughout this process are ones I will cherish forever.” CLASSROOM INNOVATION Sarah Rodefeld, Business Development Manager at HON, emphasized the need for adaptable classroom furniture. “We introduced trapezoid-shaped Build student desks to maximize reconfiguration options and incorporated varying desk heights for a dynamic learning environment,” she explained. This flexibility allows teachers and students to tailor the space to different activities, enhancing engagement and collaboration. Holly Clarke from Henricksen highlighted the importance of early planning. “We created mockups for teachers and students to test,” she said. “This feedback was instrumental in crafting solutions that met the district’s unique needs. Our role as a furniture dealer goes beyond just providing products; it’s about being an advisor and problem solver for the client.” The cafeteria, once described as having a “harsh and unwelcoming” atmosphere, was transformed into a vibrant hub for both the school and community. The redesign featured soft seating with durable vinyl coverings, ensuring the space could serve multiple purposes beyond lunchtime, such as study sessions and dance practices. This project was a true community effort, involving input from teachers, parents, and board members. “Manhattan’s commitment to their students and community was evident in every decision,” Clarke shared. This collaboration ensured the final design met the diverse needs of students and residents alike. CONSTRUCTION + DESIGN COLLABORATION Kirk Beutke, Project Manager at Pepper Construction, praised the teamwork: “The balance of small-town values and access to Chicagoland resources created a unique dynamic. Every team member stepped up, making it a truly collaborative project.” He also highlighted the project’s unique location: “Building a brand-new school in the middle of a farm field was a rare and rewarding challenge. Watching it transform from concept to completion was special.” Dvorak echoed this sentiment: “From STR Partners’ architectural design to Henricksen’s furniture planning and HON’s manufacturing expertise, everyone worked together seamlessly to deliver a fantastic school.” The collaborative process also left a lasting impression on Beutke. “The Manhattan community’s trust and involvement were unparalleled,” he noted. “They brought a sense of pride and ownership to the project, which inspired everyone on the team.” Holly Clarke reflected on the relationships forged throughout the process: “Working with the HON team and the Manhattan community was incredible. Everyone’s commitment to excellence ensured that we delivered spaces that will serve this community for decades. This was more than a project; it was a partnership.” KEY MILESTONES For Clarke, the grand opening was a highlight: “Hundreds of community members filled the school, and the excitement was substantial. Seeing students’ faces light up as they entered their new library was incredibly rewarding.” For Jeff Dvorak, the grand opening held a special significance. “Walking into the building with my son, seeing the community’s reaction, and hearing students say, ‘This is amazing,’ were moments I’ll never forget,” he shared. “It’s rare to witness such immediate and overwhelming appreciation for a project.” The new spaces have already exceeded expectations. Feedback from students, staff, and the community highlights the project’s success in creating an environment that inspires learning and fosters engagement. Rodefeld noted, “This project showcases the impact of thoughtful design and collaboration in shaping educational spaces that truly serve their communities.” As Manhattan School District 114 continues to grow, this project stands as a testament to what can be achieved when vision, expertise, and community spirit converge.
