The newly constructed Walker Library was designed to have a strong street-level presence in the Upton neighborhood; flexible spaces for reading, studying, and gathering; an engaging children’s area; increased access to technology; improved pedestrian and bicycle access; and parking.
Supporting a sense of openness and visibility along with the integration of various seating arrangements with views of Hennepin and the park were key design priorities for the new library.
The Walker Library has received design awards from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and American Library Association (ALA) 2016 Library Building Awards. the awards jury said, “This library has a great civic presence that enhances the Uptown community rather than overpowering its neighbors. The interior layout is a clean, flexible design with a clear delineation of the built spaces and the open spaces that are again reflected on the exterior.”
